What we do:
The Bahamas Children's Emergency Hostel
We are dedicated to the shelter, safety, health, education and welfare of up to 37 children, aged one to eleven years. We provide loving structure in a secure nurturing environment along with psychological support. Day to day operations at BCEH are run by an Administrator/Social Worker along with the help of 2 Administrative Assistants, as well as a full-time staff of 15 who cover 3 shifts around the clock.
The home is divided into 3 units: one for babies and toddlers and two separate units for boys and girls. The children attend local schools, go to church every Sunday and begin to learn the responsibilities of everyday life by taking on chores around the home starting at age 7. The Board of Education requires that all senior high school students perform 20 hours of community service in order to graduate. The high school students are scheduled to come on weekdays to help the children with their homework and on weekends to assist the staff with domestic chores.
